Jayden Brady Barsanti

Jayden Brady Barsanti was born on August 20, 2009 at 2:40 pm. He weighed 7 lbs. 12 ozs. and was 20 3/4 in. long. Jared and I are extremely happy and love our new baby more than we could ever imagine!

Sorry it has taken so long to post about everything. Things have been very busy to say the least. I checked my yahoo email the other day and had 271 emails. Most were comments on my facebook wall and pictures of Jayden. Obviously, I do not have time to go through all of them, but thank you to everyone who has been thinking of us, praying for us, and sending nice messages to us! :)

So... here is the story...

On August 19, after crying all night because of cramping feeling and hardly being able to sleep at all, I woke up and called the hospital. I knew I was not having "true labor" where every contraction stopped me in my tracks, etc., but I was having a constant cramping feeling that would NOT go away. So I just called to ask if that was normal because labor contractions should have a break in between them. The nurse told me to come in and get checked out to make sure the baby was fine and everything else. Jared was off and I actually had called in to work because there was no way I was going to be able to work feeling like that. We left for Richmond and arrived at MCV at about 11:00 am. I was hooked up to the monitors and baby looked just fine! (thank goodness!)

The doctor was not really sure why I was having a constant cramping feeling. I was having contractions, but not close enough or strong enough. We had a discussion of whether or not to induce me that night or wait until Monday and see if it happened on its own. I could not imagine feeling the way I was feeling for much longer and honestly did not see any reason to wait 4 more days. I have been waiting long enough! :) I was 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced. The doctor decided to go ahead and keep me at the hospital and start Pitocin.

7 o'clock pm rolled around and my nurse started the Pitocin in my IV. I stayed as active as possible and avoided just laying in bed the whole time. Jared's mom as you probably know is a labor and delivery nurse at MCV so she made sure we were well taken care of. And we were! We felt like VIPs! haha Our room was HUGE!

There was the bed on one side of the room and then on the other side was a couch, table, and plenty of room for my "coaches" throughout the labor and delivery process. Yes, coachES. I wanted Jared (obviously) in the room. But it was also very important to me to have my mom with me the whole time. Technically, you are only supposed to have 2 people in the room, but remember we were VIPs! Thankfully, I was able to not only have Jared and my mom with me, but I was able to have my sister and Jared's mom, too. It was perfect.

Here are some pictures of us during the first few hours of labor. We played Scattergories, bounced on the birthing ball, told funny stories--anything to take my mind off the contractions as they got harder and harder and stronger and stronger. I also walked A LOT... up and down the hallway!

After 7 1/2 hours of breathing through contractions and trying to be brave, I asked for my epidural. It was now 2:30 in the morning. I felt SO much better after having that. WOW. It was amazing. Only down side was now I had to stay in bed, but that was fine because I was not feeling my contractions anymore!!!

At 6:00 am, the doctor came in to see how I was doing and check to see my progress. I thought for sure I would be at least 6 or 7 cm, but I was only at 4! What?!?! I was in all that pain for so long to be at FOUR!?!? OMG. The doctor then broke my water. After my water was broken, they really did not want to be checking me too much. They said it really did not matter wheher I was 6,7,8, or 9cm because I would be continuing to do the same thing anyways so why risk the chance of any infection if it is not necessary. I was told I would get checked when I thought it was the right time.

Meanwhile, about 11:00 am came. I had been feeling some pressure, but it did not hurt so I did not think anything of it. But after I kept feeling it several times, I told my nurse that maybe I should get checked. The doctor came in. He checked me and said, "Well, I am going to go put on my scrubs. You're about to have this baby!" I was 10 cm, 100% effaced and baby was right there! OMG! Jared's mom had fallen asleep in the chair, my mom had gone downstairs to get food, Jared had just woken up and Stacy had GONE TO CLASS! (It was her first day of classes at VCU.) I started crying and freaking out! HAPPY TEARS, of course! The doctor made it seem like the baby was coming NOW. So I frantically called everyone and was ready to go.

We all know how Jayden really liked it in my belly so this should have been expected... I ended up pushing for OVER 3 hours!!!

At 2:40 pm, Jayden arrived. He was beautiful. Jared cut the cord and they put him on my chest and it was the best moment. But Jayden did not cry... he was not breathing. I kept saying, "Why isn't he crying?" Jared's mom very quickly swithced from grandma mode to nurse mode and took the baby for oxygen. It was very scary laying on the bed and watching my new baby being recessitated on a little bed across the room. Thank goodness for Jared's mom and my wonderful doctors and nurses who helped Jayden start breathing. It turned out that right as Jayden was coming out, the cord got wrapped around his neck. This was all very scary and we are very thankful Jayden is perfectly fine now.

Jayden weighed in at 7 pounds 12 ounces... he is precious.
