It all started with my 39 week appointment. Well, technically, I was 38 weeks and 3 days. It was Wednesday, August 3, 2011. I went to my appointment feeling pretty crummy since it was the end of the pregnancy. I was tired from not sleeping and just being uncomfortable. Even though I had the typical end of pregnancy feelings, I was doing pretty well. My blood pressure was great, baby's heartbeat was in the 160s, feet weren't too swollen, etc. My doctor asked me if I wanted her to "strip my membranes" when she was doing my exam. I said, "sure, anything to get the ball rolling!" (Now, let me say... with Jayden, my "membranes were stripped" two times and nothing happened...I was two days past my due date when he was born after induced labor.) Anyway, she did my exam and said that I was a good 3 centimeters dilated and 60% effaced. She also told me that if I did not go into labor within 24 to 36 hours I would ruin her success rate of stripping membranes!
Jared and I stopped and picked up some SPICY chicken wings at Target on the way home. I had been feeling random contractions, but they were very inconsistent.
That night, I began feeling contractions about every 30 minutes. They were hard contractions (I knew they weren't REAL labor) but they were hard enough to wake me up EVERY 30 MINUTES throughout the entire night. At 4:00 AM, I texted Jared to come downstairs to be on the couch with me. I was in pain! At about 5 or 6 AM, I called my mom saying she should come up that morning (Thursday) JUST IN CASE because my contractions were now about 8-12 minutes apart consistently. When she arrived at 9:00 AM or so, they were about 4-6 minutes apart. After a couple hours of contractions every 4 or 5 minutes, I called my doctor and she said we should go ahead and go to the hospital.
I really did not want to go to the hospital and be sent home. So, I was very hesitant and wanted to wait until I knew for sure I was in labor. I was in so much pain every 4-5 minutes for 2 hours so I knew it was time to go and get checked out. But, I did not want to tell anyone I was going just in case it was not the real thing...
We arrived at the hospital and I was taken to a labor and delivery triage room. I was hooked up to the monitors and I was examined. I was still where I was the day before at the doctor's office. I was still 3 centimeters dilated. So, the nurse told me I would be hooked to the monitors for one hour and then I would be re-checked. At the end of the hour, I was still at 3 centimeters. :(
So, she told me to walk around for one hour on the labor and delivery halls and then I would be checked AGAIN to see if that helped me progress. So, we walked. I could HARDLY walk because I was feeling so much pressure and when I felt contractions, I was hunched over grabbing onto the wall or Jared's hand because it hurt so bad. I kept thinking that I did not know how in the world I would make it if I was sent home feeling this much pain!
After an hour of walking, I was checked. I was STILL at 3 centimeters. :(
The nurse told me that I could get in the tub for another hour or I could stay and walk for another hour. I started crying because: 1. I was in pain and did not want to go home, 2. I did not want to keep walking around hospital hallways, 3. I HATE tubs and did NOT want to sit in a tub! So, I said I would just go home. I was discharged. They told me my contractions were just not quite close enough together because they were not making me dilate more.
I was starving because I had not eaten ANYTHING except for a tiny bowl of Fruit Loops cereal that morning. It was like 1:00 in the afternoon so Jared ordered me some Chili's sliders, fries, and chocolate shake. I drank the shake, but ended up not eating the food because I felt so bad! (I know that was probably not the best food choice when in labor, but that is what I wanted!)
I was in PAIN every time I got a contraction. I knew it was real because I turned into a different person when they would come. I just thought I was going to die. I could hardly breathe through them. I just remember thinking to myself how much pain I was in during each contraction. Then I would feel better when it was over...until the next one would start again.
By this point, we were at home. My parents were there becuase my dad was going to be babysitting Jayden while my mom came to the hospital (whenever it was the right time to be there!) I continued to feel contractions harder and harder and stronger and stronger, but we had just left the hospital and I did not want to go right back after they just sent me home! I kept telling Jared he needed to call the hospital and tell them how much pain I was in! haha
After not too much time at home at all, I just knew I had to go back. Jared called the nurses at the hospital and they said I should come back in.
So, this time I don't even know how I made it walking to the car. My contractions were 4 minutes apart, but they were lasting 1-2 minutes. We got to the hospital and walked in. I looked like the crazy pregnant lady in the movies because I was walking in, walked past the information desk heading for the elevator to the 2nd floor. The lady at the information desk said something to me, but I went right past her trying to get upstairs before my next contraction. I didn't make it and the contraction came right then. I stopped in the middle of the hospital and bent down, was crying, breathing very heavily through the horrible contraction. She asked if I needed a wheelchair and when the contraction was over, I said no and headed upstairs. She told Jared we would just check in later!
Another contraction came and the nurse we had seen earlier was standing there watching me as I got off the elevator... hunched over, crying, breathing, etc. She sent me straight into room 3 and got my IV hooked up. I guess they knew this time was for real and I was not going to be sent home!
We called Jared's mom so she could head up since we knew this was it. My mom was coming too. Thank God my mom was with me! She really helped me stay calm. Jared did, too, but there's nothing like having your mom with you when you are in pain! :)
Two nurses came in the room to check me. It was about 4:30 PM. I was 5 centimeters dilated. The one nurse went to get my IV fluids. I felt like I was going to vomit and about two seconds later, out came my chocolate shake! haha
I was quickly in my beautiful hospital gown, hooked up to the monitors, given my IV, and breathing on my own through HORRIBLE contractions. I requested an epidural, but they said I had to have one whole bag of IV fluids first. So I waited. They gave me some pain medicine to take the edge off while I waited for the IV to finish.
Then, my friend the anesthesiologist, came in and I signed all the papers to get my epidural. He said my mom could stay with me while I got my epidural. Jared did not even want to be in the room when I got it! SOOOO... I got my epidural and shortly after I felt like a million bucks! Not really, but I was soooo relieved to not feel the contractions anymore. I could not feel much of anything- my legs were tree stumps! :)
At about 6:00 PM, I was 6.5 cm dilated and 100% effaced. At about 6:20 PM, my doctor broke my water and told me I was 8 cm dilated. At 7:45 PM, I was 9.5 cm dilated. At 9:15 PM, I was 10 cm dilated and ready to push whenever I felt ready. I just had such a strong epidural I couldn't really feel a major urge to push at that time. So, we just watched Big Brother on TV for a few minutes... I pushed for a few minutes... and just a little bit later... Isabella was born!
Our little angel was born at 10:06 PM. She was 6 pounds 10 ounces and 20 inches long. She had a full head of dark hair like her Daddy (and brother Jayden when he was born!) She was so cute!!!
I was not able to hold her right away though. Right after she came out, she was taken to the side of the room (in the same room as us) to be checked out because of possible meconium (spelling??). There ended up being no sign of meconium, but she did have fluid in her lungs so she had to be taken to the special care unit to be monitored for a little while. Around 11:20 PM, she was brought to us and never left our side the rest of the hospital stay. (except for a couple quick tests which she was in the nursery for and Jared was with her the whole time!) :)
We were very well taken care of at the hospital and we were discharged on Saturday morning, August 6.
That is the end of the labor/delivery story...
Stay tuned for Part II: Jayden Meets Isabella
